Medalist USA - 1st Singapore Championship
2007
24-25th Nov 2007
Orchid Country Club, Singapore
More than 100 players converged at the
Orchid Country Club for Singapore’s largest soft-tip
weekend of darts, darts and darts! Yes, this was the
biggest event both in players and boards and prize
money to be held since Medalist Singapore’s 1st launch
tournament back in early 2006.
The event was also made more memorable
by the largest contingent of soft-tip Indonesian players
ever to attend an overseas Medalist event. More than
20 competitive players traveled from Jakarta supported
by the local Minister of Sports, their spouses and
friends.
Preparations for the event hall got started
the day before when workers labored the whole day
and night to deliver and setup all the tournament
boards and dressed up the hall in true Medalist colors.
By the time the hall was completed, it was already
passed midnight and officials only had a few hours
of nap before coming in early the next day again.

Although the event officially starts at
11am, many players were already seen at the hall an
hour and half before that, getting warm up. The event
was officially declared open with welcome speeches
from both Medalist Singapore and Medalist Indonesia.
The games finally got underway with the
Doubles medley for flights A, B and C. The teams were
split into various groups and played round-robin games
with 1 or 2 teams eliminated from each group. Competition
was keen and many of the newer players were nervous
from the pressure in a competition challenge. Only
those who persist survive to the next single elimination
round!
In the single elimination round, a best
of 7 games were played in each flight, with the losers
getting knocked out immediately and winners proceeding
up the ladder. The finals were played on 2 specially
allocated boards and each finalist was marched into
the room in pomp and style to the loud music of the
official Medalist Finals music.
In the A flight, the combo Mawi/ Sebastian
defeated Jamal/ Roger to take the champion trophy.
In the B flight, it was an all-Indonesian finals as
Bobby/ Johanes defeated Juan/Vino, while in the C
flight, it was an all Target-teams affair with the
up and coming pair of Kenneth/Shervin defeating the
more experienced Edmund/Jo Choy.

event was held in single elimination format in two
flights. The Spartan team of Johnny and Tony Teo wiped
out the competition’s balloons to take the A/B flight
champions while the Target team of Jaycee and Victor
defeated the Stanley's Pub team of Jeffrey/Jolson
to take home the B/C flight trophy.

The last two events, Grandmasters and
Ladies Super Count-Up finally got started at around
9pm. By then, some of the players were already tired
from the day’s event but that did not stop them from
signing up and putting their best efforts as the grandmaster’s
event promises a challenge of the best of the best
with no handicap and most importantly, with the highest
winnings of the tournament.
In the ladies Doubles Super-Count Up event
saw the Indonesian-Singaporean pair of Julia and Claudine
up against Jaycee and Kristine but the Singaporean
pair held their own to grab the champion trophy.

In the grandmaster’s event, the semi-finals
itself were already exciting. It showcased neck-to-neck
games of Desmond Liew playing against Jamal and Sebastian
against Sani. In the end, Desmond and Sani triumphed
over their opponents. However, the finals were to
be played on the next day as it was already too late
into the night and everyone was tired from the many
games of the day.
Day 2 of the SG Championship started with
the doubles medley with some changes to the game format
to reduce the time taken.

Once the C and B Flight events got underway,
the grandmaster’s finals game were played. It was
an exciting game with some teams putting their game
on-hold to watch the finals between Desmond Liew and
Sani. It was, again, a neck-to-neck game until Desmond
threw some amazing white-horse, 3-in-a-bed and many
hat tricks to defeat Sani to grab the title "Medalist
Grandmaster of the Year"!

After the grandmaster’s finals, a showcase
event challenge was played between Paul Lim, who just
arrived late the night before, and Desmond. It was,
again, an amazing game to watch as Desmond hold out
his own against the 5 times World Champion. In the
end, it was a triumph of experience as Paul Lim recovered
from initial loss and played many good shots to overcome
Desmond.
Finally, the biggest event of the tournament
“Team Trios” got underway in the evening. The event
pit teams representing a Medalist location and each
team’s pictures were also featured in the Medalist
Year Book. The winning team gets to bring back a large,
beautifully gilded challenge trophy for their location.
Whichever location wins the Challenge trophy 3 times
in a row gets to keep the trophy permanently.
In the Team Trios B/C flight finals, it
was an all-Greenforest affair as Greenforest Charlie
put up a stunning win against Becks Hero.
The Team Trios A/B flight finals was very
exciting as it pitted Target’s Max Power against Storm’s
Storm Bringer. Supporters from both locations cheered
for their team and all players of the both teams put
up an amazing game of sharp shooting talent. They
played neck-to-neck games until the last deciding
game of cricket. Target’s Kenneth pulled off a rabbit
from the hat when he scored an important 3-in-a-bed.
From then on, it was highway all the way as Target’s
Kenneth, Joseph and Azahar finally overcome the team
from Storm’s Roger, Albert and Jimmy.

In the prize presentation,
which only got started just before midnight, Target
Darts and Greenforest took home the two Challenge
trophies for 2007. They will surely do their best
to maintain their win again next year. All the trophies
were given away and the remaining players that were
around cheered happily even though they were tired
and sore. In the end, everyone was already talking
about and looking forward to next year's event.
